PROTESTS MADE

PERSONNEL OF DAIRY COMMISSION UNOFFICIAL RELEASE Special to the Daily Times WELLINGTON. Aug. 4. Telegrams of protest have already been received from the Auckland province as the result of the unofficial release of the names of the personnel of the new Dairy Commission. It has been pointed out that, two of the members are chairmen of directors and a director respectively of one South Island (Christchurch) company, and that one other is a director of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, while the man mentioned as chairman is also chairman of directors of the latter company. The Auckland district, it is stated, is ignored in the commission. Three of the members—and if Mr W. Marshall is made chairman—four will come from two companies, one South Island and one North Island. It is further pointed out that the North Island company represents less than half the Auckland district production of butter and only just over double the Auckland district production of cheese.- The South Island company further is only one of the small companies in that island which altogether produce only 3.65 per cent, of the butter for export and 14.43 per cent, of the cheese. All this particular company’s production, it is stated, is for the local market, the South Island having to be supplemented with North Island supplies in the winter. , ~ The industry representatives, as unofficially announced, are Messrs R. A. Candy (New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company), H. E. Blyde (Federated Farmers), W. G. McCartney (chairman of directors. Tai Tapu Dairy Company, Christchurch, and a member of the Dairy Board). The Government representatives are Messrs F. P. Walsh (Economic Stabilisation Commission), C. Morgan Williams (a director of the Tai Tapu Dairy Company and a member of the Dairy Board), and B. C. Ashwin (Secretary to the Treasury). Mr Marshall, the probably chairman, is chairman of directors of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company. There is still a possibility in connection with the chairmanship that the name of Sir Francis Frazer, who was chairman of a committee which made recommendations as to prices and standards in 1938, may be proposed as chairman.
