FAT SHEEP AND LAMBS FIRMER P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, June . 4.. The store sheep entry at Addington today totalled 2040, and except for a few pens of Chathams wethers the quality was medocre. All classes met with a firm demand at full late rates. The lamb offering was 714, and the quality ordinary to inferior. The recent increase in the export schedule caused sharp appreciation in values, and the demand was keen at values Is Cd to 2s higher. An excellent line of shorn Romney wether lambs from the Chathams made 29s 7d, the highest for two months. Best local wether lambs made from 21s to 24s 3d; medium to good, 18s 9d to 20s 6d; culls, down to 10s 3d. Best ewe lambs made from 26s to 27s 6d; medium; 20s 3d (o 24s 3d; ordinary, 14s 6d to 19s. Four pens of two-tooth ewes were, offered, and two sold—a pen of Chathams Romneys which had been running with a Southdown ram made 365. A line of attractive North Canterbury halfbreds mated with a Border Leicester ram made 30s. Five hundred and seventeen adult ewes were offered. They were a nondescript collection, and showed little condition. bidding was keen at values a shade firmer. A pen of Chathams Romneys made 24s 6d, and another line of 75 from the same source made 22s 9d. Better local sheep made from 17s 5d to 20s, and others were 8s 9d up. Five hundred and forty-five wethers were offered, and the inquiry was keen. Chathams Romneys also topped this section—a pen of 66 selling at 33s lid. Best local wethers made from 30s to 33s 6d; good, 26s to 27s Id; medium, 20s 6d to 255; culls, down to 14s Bd. The fat lamb entry was 2664. There was a general increase in values following the schedule increase. There was a notable improvement for lighter lambs. One big line of 340 averaged 36s 6d. Values: Extra prime fat lambs made to 48s Id; prime, 41s to 425; good, 37s to 39s 6d; medium, 31s to 36s Gd; light, 26s to 295. The fat sheep offering was 5500, and although the sheep were of normal size, they were insufficient for requirements as the schedule . increase allowed exporters wider limits. The quality was good. Included were many lines of Chathams wethers which comprised at least half of the wether offering. Chathams wethers were from 2s to 3s higher than in recent sales. Other wethers sold well throughout, and overall were fully 3s higher. - Ewes in Keen Demand The demand for ewes was keen with opening rates 2s higher, but there was a general firming throughout and at the finish prices were 4s above opening rates. Many butchers were' unable to fill requirements. Values: Extra prime heavy wethers made from 46s to 55s 7d; prime heavy. 40s to 445; prime medium-weight, 34s to 395; ordinary and light, 28s to 335. Extra prime maiden ewes made' to 46s Id; prime heavy ewes, 29s to 35s 7d; prime medium, 25s to 28s 6d; ordinary, 20s to 245; unfinished, 12s to 18s. The fat cattle entry was 527. Values for the best were firm, but unfinished sorts were harder to sell. Best beef made to 60s per 1001 b; good, 45s to 52s 6d; medium, 35s to 40s. Best cow beef made to 36s 6d, and secondary to 31s. Values: Extra prime heavy steers made to £27 7s 6d; prime heavy, £l9 10s to £23; prime medium-weight, £l7 to £l9; ordinary and light, £l4 to £l6 10s. Extra prime heifers made to £2l 17s 6c}; prime, £l2 to £l6 10s; ordinary and light, £8 to £l2. Extra prime cows made to £l9 7s 6d; prime, £9 10s to £l3; ordinary and light, £6 to £8 15s. General Easing in PorJcer Section The porker entry in the fat pig section was medium. Last week’s rates were maintained until the last two races, when there was an easing of from 4s to ss. The chopper yarding was heavy and values were £2 to £3 lower. The bacon entry was the smallest of the season, and the good rates of last week were fully maintained. Values: Light porkers made from 54s 6d to 59s 6d; medium. £3 9s 6d to £3 19s 6d; heavy. £4 7s 6d to £4 17s 6d. Choppers made from £4 8s 6d to £l2 Is; light baconers, £5 Is 6d to £5 12s 6d; medium, £5 14s 6d to £6 Is 6d; heavy, to £6 17s 6d; extra heavy. £7 2s 6d to £7 8s 6d. The average per lb ranged from 9Jd to lojd.
