SERVICE TO RUGBY

W. G. LINDSAY’S RECORD Some credit for the improvement in the play of the Port Chalmers Rugby Football Club’s senior team must be given to Mr W. G. Lindsay, who recently took over the coaching of the side. “ Bill ” Lindsay has had a long association with the game as a player and coach, and his knowledge, especially of forward play, is being put to good account by the Port Chalmers men. Lindsay is a member of a famous Southland sporting family, prominent in Rugby football, lawn tennis, golf, and bowling, and it was with the Winton Club that he first came into prominence as a front-row forward, representing Southland in the 1912-13-14-18 seasons. He represented the South Island in 1914, and was one of the hookers in the New Zealand team on the Australian tour that year, this side winning all 10 matches. In 1918 he was captain of the Athletic mow the Marist) Club, which won the Galbraith Shield in the Southland Rugby Union’s competition. After transferring to Dunedin, Mr Lindsay played for the Pirates Club, and at various times has given his services as coach to the Dunedin and Taieri Clubs. He is a well-known bowler, now a member of the Otago Club, but it was as a member of the Roslyn Club that he played in C. E. Tyrrell’s team that was runner-up in the New Zealand Fours Championship in a sensational final at Dunedin in 1944.
