MEETING OF PARLIAMENT
ADVANCED BY ONE DAY
Parliament will now meet on Tuesday. June 24. a day earlier than was originally intended, because of the necessity of opening the first session of a new Parliament by Commission. The traditional opening ceremony by the Governr-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C., with the Speech from the Throne will take place on June 25 Tributes to legislators and former legislators will probably be paid on the Thursday, and an Imprest Supply Bill which will give members an early opportunity of raising, questions of public concern, may be taken on the Fl After the formal opening by Commission, which will take place m the Legislative Council Chamber, members of the House of Representatives will be directed by the Commission to appoint a Speaker They yill then return to their own Chamber to do this. The Government nominee for this office will be Mr R. McKeen, M.P. for Island Bay, who has been chairman of committees since 1939. The election of a Speaker must take place before the Governor-General meets both Houses of Parliament and delivers the Speech from the Throne.
