NEW SCHOOL
CABINET APPROVES GRANT KENSINGTON TO BE REBUILT Cabinet has approved a grant for the rebuilding of the Kensington School. This advice was received yesterday by Mr W. A. Hudson, 'M.P., from the Minister of Education, Mr Mason. Commenting last night on the announcement, the chairman of the, Kensington School Committe, Mr F. A. Sims, said that the building controller had given his permission for the new school some time ago. The committee had hoped that it would have been started last year, but the commencement of the building even now seemed fairly remote. . - Explaining this, Mr Sims said that two properties adjoining the present school had been acquired, but these were at present occupied by tenants, one of whom had a family of seven children. Suitable alternative accommodation would be difficult to find, but until this was done the preliminary work for the new school could not be commenced. , ~ ' , As far as he knew, the new school would be much smaller than the present building, Mr Sims said. The roll was about 170 just now, but he thought the new school was to be a contributing one, with Standard V and 6 pupils attending the Macandrew Intermediate. The new school would be of a single storey and of wooden construction. The main entrance would face Grosvenor street, and the building would be as far from the busy intersection of the present school, which is about 75 years old, Mr Sims said it was hopelessly out-dated, and highly unsatisfactory from every viewpoint. The approaches were dangerous, and the traffic noises were distracting. The new school would alleviate that position. It would be built on a higher foundation, and there would be no fear of floods.
