PUBLIC APOLOGY
STUDENT PRESIDENT ADVICE TO FRESHERS Chosing the course of apologising for his speech at the Freshers’ Dance and his message in the Students’ Handbook and of resigning from his official position, the president of the Otago University Students’ Association, Mr John Child, forwarded to the University Council at its meeting yesterday an unqualified apology. This action will mean that he.will be excluded from the University for the rest of the term, whereas if he had refused to accept these conditions he would have been “sent down” for the full year. The apology was as follows:
“ I hereby make an unqualified apology to the University Council, the students of the Otago University, and to the community for certain remarks made by me as president of the Otago University Students’ Association in the foreword of the Students’ Handbook and at the freshers’ social. I realise that in my responsible position such statements should not have been made and I regret having made them.”
