NORTH ISLAND CENTRES DAMAGE IN MANAWATU STORAGE OF WATER INCREASED P.A. PALMERSTON N., Apl. 15. Palmerston North paid for its immunity from the last North Island cyclone when the city was lashed last night by a gale which reached a top velocity of 69 miles an hour and an average of 54 miles an hour for four hours. There was widespread damage to property—trees were uprooted, roofs blown off. power lines broken down, and several areas this morning were still without power and communication. The air services to-day were not affected. Heavy rain accompanied the gale, a fall of lin being recorded. At Mangahao 1.59 in fell at No. 1 dam, and 80 points at the powerhouse. The level of the lake before the rain was 1309 feet, and after the rain 1345 feet.
