BRITISH-TRANSJORDAN PACT

UNITED NATIONS INQUIRY

(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 15. Three questions relating to Transjordan’s military alliance with Britain have t>een sent to Dr Jamil Pasha Tutunji, the country's American representative, by the United Nations’ Membership Committee. They are, first, the means by which Transjordan is maintaining its territorial integrity and political independence; secondly, Transjordan’s Budget, with as much detail as possible concerning the source of revenue and the headings of expenditures; thirdly, the effect of the application of the annex to the treaty alliance on the maintenance of Transjordan’s territorial integrity and political independence. Dr Tutunji, in an interview, said the treaty was based on an equal footing between the nations and with no major or minor party. Transjordan was a member of the Arab League and saw no danger of any other country attacking her. She had a modern army of 20,000. Income tax had recently been introduced which would provide large parts of the Government's income. He would study the questions in detail and consult his Government before officially answering the committee. Observers believe that the application provides more intricate problems than almost any other now before the committee, because of the Arab and Jewish question. Neither Russia nor America has yet expressed an opinion on the application, the main opposition thereto having come from Poland. Australia maintains the attitude that the committee exists simply to report objectively on each application, the decision thereon being the Security Council’s responsibility.
