FEMININE TRUCULENCE

BLACK SWAN KILLS MATE GIFT TO MR CHURCHILL MELBOURNE, (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) Aug. 16. Mr Winston Churchill has written to the Prime Minister, Mr J. B. Chifley, saying that the male of the two black swans sent to him from Australia in 1942 “died recently at the hands of its truculent spouse.” The swans were sent from the Melbourne Zoo to Mr Churchill as a gift following a clash between Dr H. V. Evatt and Mr Churchill in 1942. After convincing Mr Churchill of Australia’s need for United Nations’ supplies to strengthen Australia against Japan, Dr Evatt said: “Australia owes you a lot, but 1 do not suppose you want anything.” Mr Churchill replied: “Yes, I do—two black swans.”
