DUTCH EAST INDIES
ECONOMIC DIFFICULTIES SHORTAGE OF SUPPLIES (Rec. 0.30 a.m.) SINGAPORE, Aug. 15. It is questionable whether the Netherlands East Indies will remain approximately self-supporting until next harvest, states a communique issued after a conference of liaison officers under Lord Killearn. The Dutch East Indies were represented at the conference, which noted that there had been droughts, administrative difficulties, and ration cuts in the territory's eastern part. There was a shortage of supplies for Surabaya, Semarang, and other places. Rice had not been received from the interior.
