SINGING WELSH MINERS

MAY APPEAR IN LONDON COVENT GARDEN CONTRACTS (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 15. If they can secure their release from coalpits, where they come under the essential workers’ regulations, two Welsh miners, Mr Evan Evans, of Tonypandy, and Mr Wilfrid Jones, of Trelewis, will receive contracts with the Covent Garden Opera Company and will sing in London during the coming season. Evans is said to have one of the finest baritone voices Wales has ever produced, and Jones is an outstanding tenor. A third Welshman, Islwyn David, of Ammanford, who won the baritone solo event at the last national eisteddfod, has also been offered a contract at Covent Garden. The release of Evans and Jones is at present being discussed by the Ministry of Fuel.
