PUBLIC FIGHTS
Sir,—What a pity it is that " B. E. K.” does not find some place where he can live in peace on a little, soft pink cloud. Apparently he wants to change human nature. It is the most natural thing in the world for youngsters to fight and tussle. As they grow bigger, why should they not learn to box or wrestle under competent instructors so that they are immunised to serious injury? We can be injured much more seriously in our everyday life and work than we can be in any ring or on any mat. Properly trained muscles are resilient enough to give the body an " armadillo “ protection. " B. E. K.” overlooks the fact that in China, India and Bagdad " straight ” wrestling suits the inhabitants. In New Zealand we like to be entertained in a more lively manner, hence the showmanship. If boxing and wrestling associations were not " out for profits ” they would not be able to secure the services of other than local contestants. “B. E. K.” would probably welcome this, because our sports could then die out. What does he suggest should replace these healthy sports— Yogi?—l am, etc., Gloves. Dunedin, August 8.
