WAITAKI FISH LADDER
Sir,—l ilotice Ln 'the report of the combined meeting of the Waimate and Waitaki Acclimatisation Societies that members were unanimous that the fish ladder .at Lake Waitaki should be closed to prevent eels from gaining access to the lake.
Posibly it sounds all right, but had the members taken the trouble to make a few inquiries, from persons actually on the spot, they would have been told that during the 12 years since the ladder was opened a careful watch has been kept, and One eel only has been seen in it. Screens of fine gauze were also put in, under the supervision of the late Mr Oliver, and yielded just—nothing.—l am, etc., Fisherman. Lake Waitaki, August 5.
