THE TRANSPORT SYSTEM

Sir,—May I reply shortly to Mr Grelg’s comments on my letter? I did not forget the cable trams, but they are beside the point at issue, as they are not on the electric lines. In their case transfer tickets could and should be provided, and if Caversham trams are not to run past the Exchange. transfers should be issued to users of these trams also if desired. No conductor will accept an additional penny from incoming people from other trams. If Mr Greig thinks they should, perhaps he will instruct them to do so. Being past school age, I have never ventured to ask them to, but will be pleased to be assured that it is acceptable. As regards the comparison with the cable trams, why be content to aim at one section of the transport service being “no worse ” than another? The hill people also complain of an unsatisfactory time table and increased fares, but I leave them to speak for themselves. Caversifam trams used to run past the exchange, and there is no real reason why at least alternate ones should not do so again. “ Where there's a will there’s a way," but obviously the will is lacking. Changing trams to and from Caversham costs us much inconvenience and many extra pennies—an advantage of course to City Council transport funds, most unfair to tram users. Larger trams should always be available at rush hours. Cr McCrae speaks tof Wellington’s “ small scheme ” for trolley buses, which, considering the size of that city, will probably be as large as that of little Dunedin. if not larger. As Wellington has. besides buses, an excellent and extensive tram service (especially when compared with our limited one), which has been well kept up, there is not the same need for great improvement in. the immediate present. When there is, \ have no doubt it will be provided. I think I am correct in saying that all Wellington electric trams travel more than two sections and the sections are much longer than ours.—l am, etc., Glen road. August 9.
