TAIERI'S GOOD WIN

ADVANTAGE OVER UNIVERSITY B Showing better combination in the backs and a more aggressive spirit In the pack, Taieri beat University B ,by 23 points to 8 at Bathgate Park. The score, while not giving an accurate indication of the trend of the game, served to indicate the Taieri team’s considerable advantage in so far as solid rucking and control of the ball in the strong cross wind were concerned. University B made little attempt to put to advantage the slight favouring angle of the wind in the first half, a try ■by North, from a forward scramble, being the only University movement that achieved the success it deserved. Taieri, on the other hand, combined sound forward tactics with good back play, and at the conclusion of the first half had scored 11 points, tries being recorded by P. Johnson. S. Whitson, and by J. Geary, whose try was converted by McLeod. In the second half Taieri’s superiority was marked, for University B seldom carried the game out of its own territory. A field goal by E. Gordon, a try by K Frew, which was converted by B Wilkins, and an unconverted try by B. Scott gave Taieri a commanding lead, but in the last minutes of the game the University backs went into action, Isdale, Dickson, and Dobson handling smartly and passing to Cannon, who ran away from the defence to score between the posts. Cannon converted his own try, and the game ended: Taieri 23 points, University B 8 points. Mr P Johansen was the referee.
