ATTRACTIVE DISPLAY

WIN FOR UNIVERSITY A Displaying superior pace, combination, and finish, University A played attractive Rugby to score an impressive win against Kaikorai by 24 points to 6 in the main match at Carisbrook. T. Kawe’s place kicking was a feature of the game, and, aided by the strong wind, he kicked a penalty goal from 52 yards out in the first half, which ended with University leading by 11 points to 3. In the second spell Kaikorai’s defence wilted under the strain of persistent attacks by the University backs and forwards, and, aided by weak tackling, the Light Blues largely dominated the picture in the final 20 minutes of the game. The University forwards commanded a large share of the ball from the scrums and rucks, and they were splendidly led by K. J. O’Connor, who gave one of his best displays, being in the forefront of the play throughout. G. D. Gordon gave a skilful exhibition of hooking, and W. A. Fraser and O. Seeley were also prominent. The backs combined in some bright movements, and R. R. Elvidge, C: J. Moore, and I, J. Botting were a constant source of danger to the opposition. Botting scored two spectacular tries, the second coming after a spectacular burst of 40 yards following passing in which the whole line handled. T. Kawe gave a first-class display at full-back. The Kaikorai forwards lacked cohesion in the tight, but L. Aitken, H. Thompson, and J. Thomson showed up in the loose. The backs began well, but, with their forwards beaten for the ball,- theirs was largely a defensive role after the first 20 minutes. J. Haig and D. Murdoch combined well in the early stages, and their defensive work, in contrast to that of some of the others, was always solid. Tries for University were scored by Botting (2), Elvidge, and O’Connor. Moore converted two tries, while Kawe converted a / try and kicked two penalty goals. Murdoch kicked two penalty goals for Kaikorai. Mr J. Frood was the referee. .
