SENIOR COMPETITION

SOUTHERN’S CLOSE CALL DECISIVE WIN FOR UNIVERSITY A The second round of the Otago Rugby Football Union’s senior competition was commenced on Saturday. The grounds were in good order, but a boisterous wind and driving rain affected the play in most of the , matches. As a result of the day’s games, the issue in the championship has practically been narrowed down to a duel between Southern and University A, with Pirates perhaps holding an outside chance. .

Southern was hard pressed to hold its position at the head of the table, a try on time enabling it to snatch victory from Dunedin by 10 points to 9 in the early match at Carisbrook. In the second match at Carisbrook. which attracted a crowd of about 4000, University A avenged its first round defeat with a decisive win against Kaikorai by 24 points to 6, the winning team showing all-round superiority. Playing at the Caledonian Ground, Pirates A beat Zingari-Richmond by 11 points to 7, and at Bathgate Park the improving Taieri side had a comfortable win over University B by 23 points to 8. Training College won a closely contested game against Union, and Alhambra scored its second win of the season by defeating Port Chalmers on the latter’s ground. Competition Results
