NO MORE HEAT
USE OF COAL SAVERS SCIENTIFIC TESTS MADE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 9. “On a well-lighted fire these materials will impart colour to the flame and thus give the impression of a hotter fire, but reports of technical officers of the Scientific and Industrial Research Department clearly state that the addition of such substances to coal will not enable the coal to give out more heat than would be obtained in ordinary circumstances,” said the Minister of Scientific and Industrial Research, Mr D. G. Sullivan, to-night, when referring to the presence on the market cl preparations claiming to produce from coal “ more heat ” and “a longer burn” from less coal. He added that a number of these preparations had been examined from time to time, and he had been advised by his officers that they had been shown to consist mainly of common salt with small amounts of sodium carbonate, iron oxide or potassium permanganate (Condy’s crystals). He said that he was informed that tests made on similar products in Great Britain some years ago had shown that these preparations had no effect on the total radiation thrown into a room by a fire, nor upon the duration of its burning, nor upon the rise in the temperature of the air in the room.
