PACKED IN RUBBER

MEAT FOR EXPORT RESUMPTION OF PRE-WAR EXPERIMENTS (•P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 9. Experiments conducted before the war in packing New Zealand export meat in a thin container of rubber are to be resumed on what is hoped to be a commercial scale. This statement was made to-day by Mr Bradley Dewey, president of the American Chemical Society, who is a member of the party of American scientists visiting New Zealand between the atom bomb tests at Bikini. Mr Dewey spent some time to-day examining conditions at freezing works at Westfield. Mr Dewey said that his company, Dewey and Almy, of Massachusetts, had begun experiments with rubber meat packings before the war, and it was found that New Zealand produce contained in this way had reached Smithfield in excellent condition. Freezing did not harm the meat, but the thin container was designed to prevent it from drying out. “We are hoping to renew the experiments as soon as rubber stocks become available,” Mr Dewey added, “ but we now anticipate that it will be on a scale of actual commercial development.” He paid a tribute to the quality of the Dominion’s export meat and said that he had never seen a more uniform line of lambs than those presented at the freezing works.
