CRITICALLY INJURED

AMERICAN MILLIONAIRE (Rec. 0.30 a.m.) NEW YORK. July 7. Mr Howard Hughes, a millionaire film producer and aircraft builder, was critically injured when his new photographic monoplane crashed on a test flight. Hughes is reported to have suffered a fractured skull, and one lung collapsed. He has a 50-50 chance of surviving. The aircraft, which was piloted by Hughes, was flying very low when it crashed on the roof of a house. It hit another roof, smashed down on a garage, and set fire to a house and garage. The gas tanks exploded after the crash, setting fire to the plane, which was destroyed. The plane, which was designed by Hughes for army use for photographic work and long-range reconnaissance, had a speed rated at better than 400 miles an hour and a ceiling of over 40,000 leet.
