SHORTAGE OF STEEL
AUSTRALIAN FURNACES CLOSE DOMINION MAY BE AFFECTED (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 8. Engineering firms are facing the worst steel shortage for 20 years, according to a steel supply authority. Because of the man-power shortage, one Newcastle works has five furnaces not working. Stocks of steel sheets cannot be sent to Sydney because of the restricted shipping and rail services. If relief does not come soon many Sydney engineering firms will have to close down. The curtailment of supplies may affect New Zealand industries dependent on Austi'alian steel.
