PASSIVE RESISTERS
INDIANS IN SOUTH AFRICA SUPPORT FROM CONGRESS BOMBAY, July 7. The All-India Congress Committee decided unanimously to send congratulations to the Indian passive resisters in South Africa *’ on their brave fight.’’ and assuring them of Congress support in the “unequal struggle.’’ Mr Gandhi, addressing the committee, said: “ White civilisation in South Africa cannot be kept alive by such means. I wonder how a brave man like Field-marshal Smuts, who has praised Indians so much in the past, could be instrumental in taking steps to deprive the Indians of their elementary rights. Durban owes its present prosperity to Indians. The whites agreed to give the Indians votes not as equals, but as inferiors.”
