COLLIER DELAYED

POOLTA AT GISBORNE CREW REFUSES TO SAIL (P.A.) GISBORNE, July 8, The collier Poolta, which was scheduled to sail last night for Greymouth, was held up in Gisborne owing to a dispute with the seamen and watersiders regarding a small quantity of coal left in the No. 4 hold. The ship’s sailing was delayed indefinitely, and representations have been made to the seamen's headquarters to obtain a direction to the men. It is stated that 15 tons of coal were not unloaded from the No. 4 hold by Saturday evening, and. although the consignees agreed to this being carried over to avoid delaying the ship’s departure. the crew declined to take the ship to sea with the coal still in the hold.

When the shipping company endeavoured to secure a gang this morning, the union required a guarantee of an eight-hour shift at Sunday rates of 8s 5d an hour, which the company refused as unreasonable.
