DUTCH DESTROYER
NOT EXPECTED IN DOMINION (p.A.) WELLINGTON, July 8. There semed to be no reason to suppose that the damaged Dutch destroyer Piet Hein would make for New Zealand, said the Netherlands ViceConsul. Mr H. Arriens, to-day. Although a cable message from Sydney on July 2 reported that the Piet Hein was sailing for Batavia, the Canterbury Trades Council suspected that she might come to the Dominion, and accordingly asked the Federation of Labour and the trades councils in other main centres to instruct all workers to follow the lead of the Australian trade unionists and refuse to da any work on the destroyer “If there had been any likelihood of the Piet Hein coming to New Zealand,” said Mr Arriens. “we would surely have been advised by the Netherlands Consulate in Melbourne As it is. we have heard nothing.” The Piet Hein, although in a leaking condition, was considered seaworthy.
