COMFORTABLE WIN

PIRATES B BEATS UNIVERSITY B Pirates B scored a comfortable win against University B at the University Oval by 17 points to 3, but the game was a scrappy one', and the standard of play rose aDove the mediocre on only a few occasions. Both sets of backs saw plenty of the Dali, but on the average the giving and taking of passes were poor, many likely movements being spoiled as a results. Some of the passes sent out were very wild and would have provided openings for more experienced players. L. M. Uttley, the Pirates' first five-eighths, was the best back on the field, and he had more penetration than the rest of his backs, but, he, too, passed poorly on occasions. He was closely watched by G. Powell, his opposite number, who was sound on defence. The forwards were fairly evenly matched, but neither pack showed much cohesion and the loose play was of a scrambling nature. N. R. Glengarry, G. Barton, and E. R. Saunders were the best of the Pirates’ pack, and R. D. Fraser, J. Valentine and S. Young led the University forwards. The Blues were not at full strength. A. Ritchie opened the scoring for Pirates with a good try behind the posts, S. McNeil converting, and McNeill kicked a penalty goal shortly afterwards. A. Dobson kicked a penalty for University B, making the half-time score B—3. In the second spell, A. J, Rennie, E R. Saunders and R. Skinner each scored tries for Pirates, none of them being converted. The referee was Mr J. A. King.
