SOCIAL SECURITY
Sir, —In fairness to the memory of one who wielded an influence, and whose influence remains, it may be as well that the younger generation be given some information. It was the Hon. Richard Seddon, Prime Minister of New Zealand in the days of the Liberal Party, who came to the rescue of those who found themselves in difficult circumstances during their old age. Through foresight and knowledge of suffering humanity, he found a way of instituting a benefit scheme. This scheme captured the attention of Mr Lloyd George, then Prime Minister of England, who left no stone unturned until a pension wa? introduced throughout Britain. -
One has read of the joy, as well as amazement, caused by the unheard-of benefit which relieved distress in those days It may be as well to remind ourselves, too. that the National Party, when in power in New Zealand, was considering a plan for the benefit of Invalids. To study the origin of things throws light on many matters.—l am, etc.,
Honour Where Due.
