THE ATLANTIC OCEAN

LEVEL RISING GRADUALLY EIGHTEEN INCHES A CENTURY (Rec 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 6. The level of the Atlantic Ocean has been rising for the last 20 years at the rate of 18 inches a century, according to the United States Coast and Geodetic survey. Approximately the same rise was recorded on the west coast of the continental United States but on the south-western coast of Alaska the land appeared to be rising. Officials were unable to state whether the changed levels were the result of an increase in the quantity of water in the oceans or the sinking of the land mass, but say they were too clearly defined to be a temporary change in the ocean tides.
