PLASTER SHORTAGE
FACTORIES CLOSE DOWN LIMITED SUPPLIES OF GYPSUM IP. A.) WELLINGTON, July 6. Two fibrous plaster factories in the Hutt Valley have closed down and others are working on a very small percentage of the normal production rate because of the shortage of plaster supplies. The shortage is due to the difficulty of obtaining gypsum shipments from Australia, arid it is expected to continue for a month or six weeks. The importation of British gypsum and also plaster from Britain and the United States has been suggested to the Government by the Building Trades Federation. The secretary of the federation, Mr N. N. -Hildreth, states that the shortage affects all internal linings, both plaster sheets and solid- plastering. The limited supplies of gypsum coming into the country were being rationed as equitably as possible, and sources of possible supply were being investigated. Some workers would be forced out of the trade temporarily and the shortage would also affect allied trades to some extent.
