NURSES’ HOME

NEW SOUTH WING PROVISION FOR 100 BEDROOMS A start has been made by the contractors, the Love Construction Company, on the foundations of the south wing of the Nurses’ Home of the Dunedin Hospital. The.building will be of five storeys, and there will be a centre bay six storeys high extending along Castle street for a distance of 140 feet south of the existing concrete building, which was erected some years ago.

When the building is completed, the main entrance to the home will be from Castle street, instead of from Cumberland street as at present. The new building will provide bedroom accommodation for 100 nurses, each of whom will occupy a single room. There will be two suites ot rooms for the home sister and the submatron, staff sitting rooms for staff nurses, sisters and the senior staff Provision is made for ironing and sewing rooms on each floor, and a utility room where facilities will be available to the staff for making supper after coming off duty. Each bedroom will be heated by means of hot water radiators, and provision will be made for a central vacuum cleaning plant to assist in overcoming the staffing problem. The work will probably take about 18 months to complete. The architects are Messrs Mason and Wales.
