GREEK SEAMAN

GAVE REFUGE TO SOLDIERS CHARGED WITH DESERTING SHIP (P.A.) GISBORNE, June 11. A Greek seaman-cook, Agryrios Kandyllotis, was remanded in the Police Court until Monday on a charge of unlawfully entering New Zealand at Auckland on May 31, and deserting the ship Sambian at Wellington on June 1. Counsel said that during the war the accused had given refuge on the island of Calamos to a number of New Zealand soldiers, two of whom were Gisborne men, who had identified him. Communists had gained control on the island, and Kandyllotis knew that if he returned to Greece his life would be endangered. Bail was allowed in the sum of £IOO.
