REJOICING IN SYDNEY

VICTORY CELEBRATIONS GREAT FIREWORKS DISPLAY SYDNEY, June 11. The greatest display of fireworks seen in Sydney since the sesquicentennial celebrations of 1938. was held last night from Fort Denison, the cruiser Australia, and the destroyer Arunta. It was marred to some extent when a spark from a fired rocket touched off the fireworks in the fort intended for a half-hour’s display. Two men were treated for burns at the hospital, but were permitted to leave later.

The harbour spectacles included a procession of small boats used in the war, displays by the hoses of the massed fire floats illuminated with coloured lights and searchlights, and the dropping of flares by R.A.A.F. Catalinas.

Crowds approaching 500,000 were involved in huge traffic block at Circular quay and Wynyard Stations, and food was impossible to obtain in the city. During the day the city and suburban ambulances treated nearly 800 people. The only fatality occurred when a youth fell from the Manly ferry near Circular quay early in the evening and was drowned.
