BASKETBALL
ASSOCIATION’S REQUIREMENTS The requirements of the North Otago Basketball Association were discussed at a meeting of the North Otago Sports Bodies’ Association on Monday night. Mr W. M. Uttley was in the chair. Mrs C. Brown and Miss J. Andrew, who were the delegates from the Basketball Association, stated that 15 teams, catering for approximately 150 girls, were entered In the competitions. The available courts were at Friendly Bay (3), Hospital (1), and Waitaki Girls’ High School (2). Of these courts four were too narrow for regulation play, although It was necessary to use them.- A central area was required, of at least four full-sized courts, but the most pressing need at the moment was for the association to procure a suitable area for practices. The Drill Hall had been very satisfactory for this purpose, but as it was now being used as a store for wool it was not available. .. , Mr Uttley said that the Sports Bodies Association was pressing for a major sports area embracing Takaro Park, and it might be possible to arrange suitable basketball accommodation there. He also said that the Meadowbank lawn tennis courts, when completed, would be available for basketball in the winter. . It*was mentioned by the delegates that an excellent source of local club players had been cut off when only two teams were entered from the Waitaki Girls High School In the local competitions. Formerly at least six teams had been entered from the school, and If the present entry was maintained it would seriously affect the association, as It had neither the facilities nor the time to train the girls in basketball when they left school
