INTERNED GERMANS

CIVILIANS IN BRITISH ZONE OVER FIFTY THOUSAND (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent) (Rec. 8.40 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 4. About 53,000 Germans are it is officially announced, now held in eight civilian internment camps in the British zone as the result of the British counter-intelligence authorities’ campaign against Nazi organisations and persons dangerous to the occupation. A further 2000 are awaiting transfer to such camps from areas outside the zone. These figures do not include the removals of Nazis from their public or business positions, which are the responsibility of the public safety branch. Arrests of persons thought to be a danger to the security of the Allied occupation forces are likely to be carried out for several months, but the weekly arrest figures are decreasing, and by the spring it is anticipated that they will be reduced to a few arrests each week. No decision has yet been made as to the length of internment, though certain internees who are no longer considered to be dangerous to security, or who are sick and aged, have already been released.
