ATTITUDE TO GERMANS

TROOPS IN AMERICAN ZONE COMMANDER’S ORDERS TOLZ (Germany), (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) Jan. 4. In a message to the troops of the United States Third Army, Lieutenantgeneral Lucian Truscott, commander of the Eastern Military District, American zone, declared: “Thoughtless, overbearing and careless acts by American officers and men towards German officials have impeded the accomplishment of some occupational objectives.” Decrying the attempt to “ abuse, humiliate and offer indignity to German officials, whom we were responsible for placing in office,” General Truscott warned against undue sympathy towards the German people. “It is essential that we individually and collectively should do all within our power to strengthen and dignify the present German Government in Bavaria.” German officials should be treated with “ the respect a~hd consideration due to those occupying the difficult position which we imposed on them.”
