BATAAN “DEATH MARCH”

CHARGE AGAINST HOMMA STAFF OFFICER’S EVIDENCE MANILA, Jan. 3. At the trial of Lieutenant-general Homma. evidence was given by Majorgeneral Toshimitsu Takatsu, formerly one of Homma’s staff officers, that Homma's headquarters at Bataan were situated less than 500 yards from the route of the “ death march.” Moreover, Homma travelled 20 miles down the highway while prisoners were being driven mercilessly along it. Takatsu, describing the conditions in O’Donnell prison camp, said the medicines were insufficient. He thought there was lack of food, and there was not much water. He reported the conditions to Homma’s headquarters, but nothing was done. The prosecution produced a statement written earlier by Takatsu that Homma had a very thin interest m the captives, but Takatsu declined to elaborate this in court, asserting that he was in honour bound not to speak bady of Homma in Homma's presence.
