WIN BY AN INNINGS

CARISBROOK A*s GOOD PERFORMANCE

In the absence of three players with the Otago team in Wellington, GrangeUniversity could not stave off an innings defeat at .the hands of Carisbrook A. The north end team had scored only 76 in its first innings and W. A. Hadlee declared Carisbrook A’s innings closed at the first-day total of 249 for two wickets. Although conditions at Carisbrook gave the batsmen every chance, the Carisbrook bowlers were assisted by keen fielding to dominate proceedings again in the second innings, in which Grange-University was dismissed for 130. The Carisbrook side was without Its left-arm bowler, R. Harwood. Grange-University began by losing the first wicket with only four runs scored, but then C. C. Donovan and A. Moir settled down in a partnership which showed promise of making the Carisbrook team fight hard for an 'outright win. Moir was the more aggressive and he hit freely, particularly on the leg side. He quietened down later in his innings, when he found it difficult to get his shots away through an off-side field. These two carried the score to 107 in 93 minutes before the slow bowler, R. Carter, was tried again and quickly altered the outlook. Moir gave a sharp chance to second slip at 20, but his 69 was another good innings. He hit four 6 s and five 4’s. Donovan was batting soundly and keeping the ball on the grass, and he was out as soon as he tried to force the pace, an over or two after Moir's dismissal. This was the beginning of the end, and A. W. McDougall, who had been bowling more erratically than his figures would suggest, finished off the innings lust before 4.30 o’clock. Carter deserved the three valuable wickets which he captured.
