VICTORY BALL Perhaps the most enjoyable dance held In Arrowtown for some years was the recent Victory Ball In the Athenaeum Hall. There was a large attendance from all parts of the district, and from outlying areas. Coloured lights and greenery made an attractive setting for the dancers, whose enthusiasm resulted in Macnamara's orchestra being retained for an extra two hours. The only speaker was the president of the R.S.A.. Mr D. Rowe, who referred briefly to the significance of the occasion. NEW MOTOR CAMP Under the guidance of the Arrowtown Progress League, the new motor camp has been set in order in record time. Campers this Christmas are now assured of every facility in the way of water, shelter, and cooking requirements. In the last few weeks breaks for cars have been cut in the brush, water has been laid on, fireplaces have been built, and extra shelter buildings provided. Furthermore, adequate provision for adverse weather has been made by Including indoor cooking facilities, and there is room for a substantial number of campers. BOWLING The Arrowtown Bowling Club is maintaining its place in the Central Otago Centre’s competition. At the week-end, both Roxburgh and Arrowtown were equal in third place with 36 points each. Alexandra was only five-sixths of a point ahead, with Clyde in first place, holding 39, points. After a decisive win agains' three Bannockburn 'rinks on the previous Saturday, a further two rinks were successful against Clyde on the week-end. Owing to the green being in its first season of play, it was found advisable to postpone tne official opening of the season until more work has been done on the green. It Is now bejng officially announced that the opening day will be Saturday, December 22. The Colby Bowl, which was won from Queenstown by an Arrowtown rink, has again returned to the lakeside town, having been regained this week by the narrow margin of one point. The Arrowtown rink which visited Alexandra on Wednesday last to play for the Jolly Cup was successful. WELCOME HOME L.A.C. J. Fitzpatrick, a popular young resident of the district, was given a fitting welcome in the Town Hall when he arrived home recently. The evening took the form of a dance, and an official welcome was given to the guest by the deputy-mayor, who spoke of the regard in which the guest was held In the district. NEW YEAR’S DAY GYMKHANA Arrangements are in hand for a gymkhana to be held In the Recreation Grounds on New Year’s Day. A varied programme of novelty and athletic items is being arranged. The gymkhana will be followed in the evening by a dance in the Athenaeum Hall.
