ATHLETIC SPORTS The Alexandra Athletic Club is reviving its annual meeting on New Year’s Day after having been in recess during the war years. At a preliminary meeting, held on Wednesday night, several athletes, both male and female, showed much promise, and a highly successful meeting appears to be assured. BOWLING On Wednesday night the Alexandra Jolly Cup rink (R. Hewitt, W.. 8. Clark, J. Middlemass and T. E. Sunderland) lost the trophy to an Arrowtown rink (Anderson, Saunders, Erridge and Ogilvie) after an interesting game. The final score was 21—10. On’ Thursday evening Alexandra and Clyde played in the Three-rink Competition, Alexandra winning on the aggregate scores by one point. The individual scores were as follows (Clyde names first): W. N. Taylor, C. Hanning, C. J. Davidson and J. L. Davidson 15. W. Russell, S Rivers, A. K. Hamilton and W. H. Hinton 23; C. McKenzie, W. Lopdell, A. Harris and N. Paulin 33, R. Hewitt, E. King, J. Middlemass and T. E. Sunderland 23; E. A. Grant, A. Pearce, W. K. George, and J. Hollows 23. H. H. Kemp, A Cameron, J. Dowling and W. H. King 26. FIREMAN HONOURED After having served the community faithfully as a member of the Alexandra Fire Brigade for the past 27 years, Mr John Carline has found it necessary for business reasons to resign. On the occasion of his retirement opportunity was taken by members of the brigade to make him a life member. The Mayor (Mr A. McKellar) and Ex-Superintendent G. H. Hannay, in presenting Mr Carline with a life membership medal, thanked him for his service to the brigade and to the community. Both speakers also mentioned the keenness he had shown in competitions, and his active work in coaching teams for competitions, even when he himself did not participate. Mr Carline replied. BUSINESS CHANGES HANDS Mr L. C. Collings has sold his bootmaking business In Alexandra to Mr G. Buttar, of Palmerston. PERSONAL Father E. J. Fahey, who has been relieving in the local parish during the absence of Father Monnell, has returned to Dunedin. Mr E. R. Duncan, who has been a secondary assistant on the staff of the Alexandra District High School, has been appointed to the staff of Christ’s College, in Christchurch. During his stay in Alexandra he has been a popular teacher and has taken a keen interest, not only in the academic life of the school, but in the sporting life of the boys, particularly in football and cricket. He has been officer in charge of the local A.T.C. squadron since its inception, and also Scoutmaster in charge of the local troop. Mr Duncan will take up his new duties at the opening of the next school year. Mr and Mrs George Bodley, prior to leaving Alexandra, were met at the Bendigo Hotel by numerous friends and members of the staff. Miss Avis Young, a member of the staff, in making the presentation to Mrs Bodley, spoke highly of the manner in which the members of the staff had been treated by both Mr and Mrs Bodley. Other speakers spoke highly of the manner in which the Bendigo Hotel had been run during the tenancy of the guests and wished them success in the future.
