THE EMPLOYMENT OF FEMALE LABOUR

Sir, —I am more than interested in the report In this morning’s issue of your paper of a recent industrial survey made by our local Chamber of Commerce in an endeavour to improve employeremployee relations. It is to be hoped that the many excellent suggestions made therein will be implemented by both sides. One urgent problem seems, however, to have been overlooked by the experts engaged in this inquiry, viz., the encroachment of female labour into fields hitherto reserved exclusively for males. Needless to say, I do not refer to war-time exigency. If in the near future we are to avoid serious male unemployment, something will have to be done in the direction of wage equality irrespective of sex. Inquirers for work, other than general labouring, are to-day told by the manpower officers to look around and find their own jobs.—l am, etc., Out of. Work.
