A Cold Snap.—Following mild and overcast conditions during the past week, a cold snap was experienced on Saturday, accompanied by rain. There was a heavy fall of snow in the outlying districts, St. Bathans experiencing from nine inches to a foot of snow. The fall at Blackstone Hill was also heavy, the road being blocked by drifts. At Oturehua several inches also fell, but in the Becks area there was only two inches of snow. The ranges received a heavy coat.ng down to the foothills. Following this fall conditions cleared on Monday, and there was bright sunshine. Heavy frosts are now probable, and 12 degrees was registered on Monday. It is many years since such damp conditions have prevailed in the district, the unusually heavy rainfall during the past few months having thoroughly soaked the ground. So far this month 103 points of rain has been recorded. Rugby Football. —No matches have yet been played in the Vincent Sub-union's competition pending information whether petrol will be available for teams travelling. The Matakanui Football Club was to have opened the season on Saturday with a practice match, but this was postponed owing to unfavourable weather. Victory Ball—As a conclusion to the peace celebrations, the Omakau branch of the Returned Services’ Association held a successful Victory Ball at Omakau on Tuesday of last week. 1 The function was very largely attended, and credit is due to the committee, headed by Mr G.
