TROTTING NOTES
By Sentinel
Loyal' Peter has been purchased by Mr H. Stafford. Sea Gem won his first race as a pacer at Waikouaiti in 1942. Mount Mellick, who won at (Vinton, is a brother to Sea Born. ' • It is reported that a New Zealand studmaster'is prepared to pay,big money for Our Globe, a brother to Springfield Globe, for stud purposes. Our Globe has been one of the best horses in Tasmania of recent years. Good stud horses are becoming ’ scarce in New Zealand. Mr W. L. Parkinson bought Range Finder.,on the same day that this trotter ■won from Blue Horizon at Addington ■ December 30. Mr Parkinson also now owns Clockwork, winner of the Telegraph Handicap, and Steel King, a winner at Auckland. Scottish Emperor was unlucky in the Premier Handicap, in which he finished a close fourth, on the second day of the Auckland meeting. He was pocketed on the'rails until the race was almost over, and was travelling faster than any of the others in fourth place at the finish. Hilda Potts showed rare gameness in ■winning the main sprint on the second day at Auckland. She took the lead before the home turn, but broke down at least two furlongs from the post. She i struggled on gallantly, however, and won narrowly from Captain Morant. She could only hobble into the birdcage, and her jilight was observed by the public, who gave her a warm reception. The Auckland Trotting Cup winner, Betty Boop, opened her career by finishing second to Highland Scott in the Tim,eru Nursery Stakes. Next season she was successful in tlie Ashburton Futurity Stakes, after which W. J. Doyle, sold her to Messrs P. Reid and M. Stewart. After winning three races , for them sne met with an accident, and an attempt was made to breed from her. Last season Mr Reid put her into work again under R Dunn at Claudelands, and she won the Adams Memorial at Epsom. Her Cun win raised her earnings to over £4OOO and two gold cups. Blue Horizon set new record figures for a trotter over a mile and five furlongs when he won in 3min 31 3-ssec (a 2min lOsec mile rate) in the Hornby Handicap at Addington ori Monday. He ran second on the first day. of the Canterbury Park meeting in 3min 32sec, after losing about 36yds at the start. The previous trotting record for the distance was held by Within, 3min 32 2-ssec. On Monday (says the Press) Blue Horizon put up' faster time than the top-class pacers. Happy Man won the Mason Handicap in 3min 31 4-ssec. It is hardly to be wondered at, therefore, that Blue Horizon had to be driven out to beat Sea Max. who in receipt of 24yds from Blue Horizon, had him doing his best all the way down the straight
