ENTRANCE FROM SEA
BLOWHOLE AT CATLINS Several persons rowed into the Catlins blowhole from the sea on Thursday afternoon, and Mrs Thomas Sherburne, of Gore, who was one of the party, is believed to be the first woman to have done so. The others who made the trip, which would have been impossible had the sea not been calm, were Mr Sherburne, Mr Bert Miller (Hina Hina), and Mr C. J. Hayward, of Dunedin. The experience was described by one of the party as an eerie one. The tunnel leading in from the 'sea is approximately 120 yards long, and is wide enough to< give a boat access. The interior is dull, but not completely dark, and daylight can be seen at either end. There is kelp at the entrance to the tunnel, but hone on either side. The water is deep for its entire length. The blowhole which, has been visited by many people walking overland from Jack’s Beach, is approximately 100 yards long and 50 yards wide, and it is 275 feet deep.
