CHILDREN’S HEALTH

CAMP AT WAIKOUAITI COMMENCING ON MONDAY The annual summer camp of the Waikouaiti Health Camp Association will commence on Monday. Thirty boys and thirty girls between the ages of 5 and 12 years, who have been selected by the school medical officer (Dr G. Stevenson), will attend the camp, which will continue for four weeks* No pains have been spared to ensure that the children will have a beneficial as well as an enjoyable holiday. Three trained nurses will be in attendance, and the camp will have the services of a physical culture intructress, Miss M Ford, of the Physical Welfare Department. The appointment of a physical culture specialist is an innovation which it is believed, will assist in improving the deportment and physique of the children. _ _ The district committee of the Dunedin Central Health Camp Council contributes £1 a week towards the maintenance of each Child in the camp, the funds being provided by the sale of health stamps. Other items, such as camp equipfment, clothing, etc., are provided by the Waikouaiti Health Camp Association. The garden at the Camp is in good order and will be able to supply most of the vegetables required for the month. An anonymous friend of the'camp has offered to supply all the mutton required. Mrs Marshall MaCdonald, honorary supervisor of the camp, said last night that this year’s camp promised to ,be well up to the standard of previous years. She expressed thanks to those who had worked and contributed towards the success of the camp, and especially to the president (Mr A. Douglass), and members of the committee of the Waikouaiti Racing Club, and to Miss E. Muirhead, Miss Jeffery, and Miss Walker, of the Health Department. Mrs D. White, who some years ago gave a hall and dormitory to the camp, has this year sent a contribution of £2O. : • . Mrs Macdonald added that the death of Lady Ferguson, who had been president of the Waikouaiti Health Camp Association since its inception 13 years ago was a severe blow to the movement. Lady Ferguson had always been an active and enthusiastic supporter of the camp, and her efforts in seeing the project successfully established would be remembered with gratitude.
