POLICE PATROL CAR

QUICK DETECTION OF OFFENCES SOLDIER CAUGHT IN CONVERTED VEHICLE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 5. The police patrol car which was introduced by the new Police Commissioner (Mr James Cummings) two months ago and keeps constant touch all. night and every night with the various police stations in Wellington received its first'mention in court to-day. The suspicions of the patrol were aroused early this morning by a car with a flat tyre, and when this car stopped by the railway station the patrol also stopped and asked a few questions. The car was thus recovered before even a complaint had been lodged, and, incidentally, it was the third that the patrol has recovered before the owner knew of its loss. The case to-day concerned a soldier, Harold Eugene Matheson, aged 24, who was charged with unlawful conversion. The accused, it was stated, had picked up a male friend, and they had driven about the city for some time. The accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on and placed in charge of the military authorities, the amount of the damage (£7) to be deducted from his military pay.
