SEVERE BURNS
TWO WORKMEN INJURED CONTACT WITH 33,000-VOLT LINE Severe burns were received by two linesmen when they were working on the main Waipori-Stirling power line south of Milton about 4.45 yesterday afternoon. The accident occurred while they were engaged in straining a wire which came into contact with a 33,000-volt line. The injured men, who were taken to the Balclutha Hospital, were:
Archibald McDonald, severe burns on feet and hands. Norman Fletcher, extensive burns on right leg.
A third workman, John Ryan, escaped serious injury. The wire which the men were straining apparently became entangled in a gorse hedge. While McDonald was working to free, it, the wire sprang and made contact with a 33,000-volt line. Fletcher, who received burns on the leg, was working on the top of a high tension pole a span away. Ryan fell from the top of another pole, but landed on the gorse hedge, which broke his fall.
