KARITANE
Welcome to Soldiers.—An enjoyable evening was held in the Puketeralti Hall on Friday last, when residents entertained Sergeant George Hughes, who has returned from four years’ service in the Middle East, and Gunner Norman Wilson, who was wounded in Italy. Mr Vickers, the chairman of the Welcome Home Committee, presided and on behalf of the residents and visitors gave the guests a hearty welcome. Other speakers who expressed good wishes were Messrs Paterson, Wyeth, Ellison, and Souquet. Mrs Macßcath, the treasurer, presented a monetary gift to each man, with the good wishes of residents. Mrs Tubman, president of the Women's Institute, also presented a monetary gift, and Mrs Oisen. sen., on behalf of Institute members, presented a floral spray to Gunner Wilson's mother. The guests suitably replied, and thanked the residents for the many parcels which had been packed and sent to them by members of the Women's Institute, The evening was spent in dancing and the local Maori party entertained with action songs, pois, and liakas.
