NOTES ON THE RUNNING

(Special) WELLINGTON, Oct. 22. Hawke’s Bay stables won the main handicap double at Trent'ham on Saturday, when Glenfalloch repeated last year’s success in th£ Wellington Handicap and Royal Heir succeeded in the Shorts Handicap. Glenfalloch was the only favourite to win. and Royal Heir was third choice. Glenfalloch was ridden by Broughton, who ran no risk of his mount stopping like he did in January, when the Racing Club Handicap was lost through misadventure. Glenfalloch was a fair way back in the first half-mile, but gradually improved, and, after making a fast run on the turn towards the straight,, .he took charge soon after straightening up for home and had the race won with a furlong to run. Patu Po, who was always prominent in the running, finished solidly for second, and Rink, who was always well placed, was beaten only In the last few strides for second, being a good third ahead of Kevin, flassform. and Voltaire. Royal Heir was one of the leaders all the way in the Shorts Handicap, accompanying Kol Ragi in the run to the course proper, where he went on alone and, though stopping near the post, he won attractively from Salmi, who made a game effort over the last furlong and successfully held off a late run from Gulf Stream.' The favourite, Sir Bradbury, was among the leading bunch to the straight, but then weakened and finished last. Park Light and Whackie did best of the beaten horses. Making her first appearance as a three-vear-old. Bridge Acre won the Wellington Guineas in handsome style. She lay In the first five until nearing the straight, where she forged ahead to put a winning break on the field. Master Ted and Colais, who filled the minor places, did not enjoy

good passages, specially Colais, who received a bad check near the five furlongs which cost him his position. Air Ace finished fourth after haying a commanding lead at the half-mile. Well-bacKed runners in Alright, Beau Cheval, and Golden Souvenir were never well placed. The favourite, Subdued, was among the leaders to the straight, but then compounded. Bridge Acre is raced by Mr J. L. Cheestnan, Wellington, who purchased her as a yearling. She was among the best of the two-year-olds last season. A Wellington owner also won the Wellesley Stakes. Mr S.’J. Newland's Defoe colt Gigli improving on his two seconds at Hastings and Masterton to win decisively from Montezuma, Reversion, and A 1 Sirat. Gigli was bred by T. R. George and was sold at the January sales for 575 guineas to Mr Newland, who is the principal patron of George’s stable. Montezuma attempted to win all the way, but was comfortably ' run down by Gigli in the last furlong. Majestic, the favourite, was prominent in the early running, but faded out in the straight and finished tenth, A 1 Sirat finished well after a slow beginning and was close up fourth. Amorlad maintained his form recovery to defeat the favourite, Tara King, in the Wainui Handicap. Both horses came from behind after the pacemakers had run themselves out, and Amorlad always had a slight advantage of Tara King In the hard finish. He was one of three winners from the South Island, the others being Albino and Kiloney, the last-named at odds above a quarter of a century W. J. Stevens, the rider of Po Huka in the Glen Hurdles, was censured by the judicial stewards for his indifferent handling of -his mount.
