IMPORT CONTROL
GOVERNMENT’S INTENTIONS “Import restrictions will be kept on as long as a Labour Government is in power,” said the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, speaking at Winton in the Awarua by-election campaign. “The control may be modified or improved,” he said, “ but it will not be removed.” Mr Fraser stated that import control had been applied to stabilise the Dominion’s financial resources in Great Britain, which had arrived at an unsatisfactory position because of surplus imports which the country was unable to absorb without spoiling the financial balance of the country’s economy.
