Sir.—The timely report on the above evil by the Natural Increase Committee of the Dominion Settlement Association seemed to the writer to have lost all its effect in its recommendations, among which we read: “ That an urgent call be made to all churches and spiritual and social leaders, etc.” When 'will these well-meaning committees and associations face the facts that the churches are powerless, that they have long since lost leadership and mean nothing to the mass of people, and that the problem of abortion Is largely economic. In short, people will not have children that they cannot afford to support. Family assistance, larger reductions in tax payments for married men with families, and priority for families seeking houses and flats instead of their being treated as social lepers, are recommendations that the earnest committees might consider.—l am, etc., Dunedin, June 16.
