RANGE OF PRICES

The following quotations per 1001 b of beef and per lb for mutton and pigs are supplied, with a comparison with last week’s prices, by our special representative at yesterday’s Burnside stock sale:—

had a well-sustained market. Anything ordinary or plain met with poor competition, and many parts of the sale were back 25s to 30s a head on recent sales. Heifers compared favourably with late sales, and cows, which were in oversupply, met with a somewhat dragging sale. Quotations—Extra prime bullocks, to £2O 7s 6d; prime, £l6 12s 6d to £lB 17s 6d; medium, £l4 7s 6d to £ls 12s Gd; light, from £9 17s 6d; extra prime heifers, to £l4 17s 6d; prime, £9 12s 6d to £ll 17s 6d; medium, £7 12s 6d to £8 12s 6d; light, from £6 7s 6d; extra good cows, to £l3 2s 6d; prime, £8 7s 6d to £lO 2s 6d; medium, £5 17s 6d to £6 12s 6d; light, from £5 2s 6d. Fat Sheep.—'The yarding of fat sheep numbered approximately 2QOO. The bulk of the yarding was made up of medium and freezing-weight ewes, and these again sold readily at full schedule rates. Freezing buyers were operating keenly for this class of mutton. Butchers’ sheep were forward in limited numbers, and met with an improved market. Ewes showed an improvement of Is to 2s a head on recent sales, while wethers, which were again in very short supply, had a very keen demand, being fully 2s to 3s a head better. Quotations:—Prime wethers. 33s 6d to 36s 3d; medium, 29s Gd to 31s Gd; light, from 24s 6d; extra prime ewes, to 33s 9d; prime, 25s 6d to 30s; medium, 22s 6d to 24s 6d: light, from 15s. Fat Lambs.—The entry of fat lambs totalled 1600. The quality generally perhaps showed a little improvement, and most of the yarding was suitable for export. Freezing buyers were again operating freely, and prices were up to schedule rates. There was an absence of any extra quality, and the trade competed with freezing buyers. Quotations: —Extra quality lambs, to 35s 6d; prime, 29s to 335; medium, 25s Gd to 27s 6d; light, from 20s. . Store Cattle. —There was a mixed yarding in this section, made up mostly of mixed sorts. There was little animation in the sale, values showing little change on previous markets. Two and a-hali to three-year-old steers made from £ 7 15s to £8 6s; 18-month-old, £6 15s to £7 4s; and yearlings, from £4 ss. There was a fairly large yarding of vealers, and the prices realised barely compared with the last sale. One extra good runner made £ll ss. Good-quality vealers could be quoted from £4 15s to £5 ss; medium, £3 10s to £3 15s; and smaller, from £2 Bs. Pigs.— There. was a fairly good entry of baconers, and a number of pens of better quality than has been offered for some time. The sale showed more life than the past two or three sales, competition towards the end being particularly good. •The improvement on the market could be-quoted at 10s a head on recent ’sales. •Extra prime baconers realised from £7 13s to £8 3s; prime, £5 15s to £6 15s; medium, £4 14s to £5; and light, from £4 14s. There was again a small yarding of store pigs, with a rather poor inquiry. Good weaners realised from 15s to 18s and medium 10s to 13s.

Dairy Cows.—The entry was a small one, with nothing of any particular quality. The demand for anything at the drop was good, but anything backward or ordinary had a poor inquiry. About four cows, which were the pick of the yarding, realised up to £l2, and other descriptions could be quoted from £4 10s upwards..
